What to Wear To A Summer Wedding
Wedding Guest Style Dos and Don'ts
Wedding season is officially in full swing! If you're like me, you're already trying to figure out what to wear to all of the events populating your summer calendar. Dressing for a summer wedding can be challenging - you don't want to be overdressed or underdressed, clashing or matching with the bridal party or gasp, resemble the bride. The key is to focus on complementing the overall style of the occasion with your dress.
So, whether you're headed to a country, traditional or formal wedding, here's a few Wedding Style Dos and Don'ts to help make your dress shopping a little bit easier.
Wedding Guest Style Dos
-
Respect & Follow the dress code from the wedding invitation.
-
Consider the location. The style of dress you choose will be much different if it's a beach wedding or at a fancy hotel.
-
Wear color. Make sure you know the couple's color palette (the invitation should give you some insight). You don't want to match the bridal party.
-
Pack a pair of dressy sandals. If you plan on getting your groove on at the reception, getting down in a pair of stilettos may be challenging, not to mention painful.
-
Wear Separates. An A-line skirt paired with a pretty blouse is a great option.
-
Bring layers. A feminine shawl is a great choice to bring, especially to keep you warm when the sun goes down.
-
Wear a statement piece of jewelry.
-
Ask your friends what they are wearing to the wedding.
-
Whatever your final dress choice is be sure to make it one that allows you to be comfortable head-to-toe.
Wedding Guest Style Don'ts
-
Don't wear white, Ever. Oh, and stay away from the ivorys and creams as well. Let the bride have her day.
-
Don't try and match your dress to the wedding colors. You risk the chance of looking like you are in the bridal party. Instead pick a dress that looks best with your skin tone and one that reflects your personality.
-
Don't go overboard. Save the glitz and the glam for another event, or of course, if the wedding invitation calls for it.
-
Don't bare it all. Keep it classy and stay covered.
-
Don't wear brand new shoes. This is tempting, especially if you just got a new pair of heels. You don't want to miss out on dancing the night away because you can't walk!
-
Don't carry a large handbag. Opt for a small clutch.

Florals
Floral dresses are great for a destination wedding or an outside garden wedding. Finish this look with soft curls, flats or wedges (heels might sink into the lawn) and a colorful clutch.
Country
A country wedding calls for a more simple, understated style. Choose a dress that is comfortable and practical for the outdoors, yet still beautiful. Go for color or print and a simple silhouette. Wedges, block heels, or cowgirl boots are the way to go.
Classic
When it comes to a classic or traditional wedding (especially one that is held in a church) it's time to go formal. Your safest bet is to choose a dress that is knee to the ankle in length. Finish your look with a pair of stilettos, simple jewelry and a stylish updo.
Formal
Go all out for a black tie wedding - Floor skimming gowns for the win. Add some bling with fun acccessories, elevated stilletos and a polished hairstyle.
Feminine
Perfect style for a vintage summer wedding, indoors or outside. Think lace, ruffles, crepe and pastel colors. Depending on the location, pair this look with stiletos or wedges, bold jewelry and a small clutch.
Maxi
If the wedding takes place on the beach or in a garden, try a long and flowy romantic silhouette. A polished updo or long loose curls will work.
